Three people died in a head on crash Wednesday south of Tonopah on Highway 95 in Esmeralda County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
NHP troopers were dispatched at 2:16 p.m. to the crash scene. A red Dodge Ram pickup pulling a trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 95 10 miles south of Tonopah. A green Mitsubishi SUV was traveling southbound on US95 approaching the red Dodge pickup.
Preliminary investigation suggests the red Dodge pickup crossed into the southbound lane of travel striking the green Mitsubishi head on, said NHP Trooper Dan Gordon.
Due to the injuries sustained from the crash, both occupants of the Mitsubishi (driver and the right front passenger) succumbed to their injuries, said Gordon.
The driver of the red Dodge pickup succumbed to the injuries he sustained a short time later. Two passengers in the red pickup were transported via CareFlight to a Las Vegas hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
A third passenger in the red pickup was treated and released on scene with minor injuries. The names of all involved are being withheld pending notification to the next of kin.
Preliminary investigation shows all 6 occupants in both vehicles were wearing seat belts. At this time, impairment is not suspected.
