Well over a thousand people were in downtown Carson City tonight to ring in the Christmas season with the Silver and Snowflake Festival and Christmas tree lighting at the Nevada State Capitol grounds.

The 300 voices of the Carson City Fifth Grade Music Students Singing Ensemble and the Carson Middle School Advanced Handbell Choir led the cheer with wonderful displays of traditional Christmas carols.

Carson Street was shut down from the Capitol building to the Carson Nugget where the streets were open for families to roam as businesses offered up merchandise, hot chocolate, candy canes and good all-around holiday spirit.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by carriage and handed out candy canes to hundreds of adoring children. Judging by the digital camera flashes all around, thousands of photos of the couple from the North Pole will likely be sent to just as many friends and relatives and put up on Facebook sites.
