A 65-year-old Reno man has been identified as the victim of a single vehicle fatal crash that happened Monday afternoon on I-580 freeway northbound near the Glendale on-ramp, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. A passenger was also injured.

Bradford W. Lipke died at the scene of the accident, reported to NHP at 12:30 p.m. His wife, passenger MaryAnne Lipke, 57, was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 1990 silver Volkswagen Jetta driven by Mr.. Lipke was traveling on the I-580 northbound on-ramp from Glendale. For an unknown reason at this time Mr. Lipke was not able to negotiate the on-ramp curve, said Gibson. The vehicle left the on-ramp travel lane and traveled across all northbound travel lanes of the freeway and struck the center concrete divider wall where it came to rest.

Both occupants were only wearing shoulder safety belts as the laps belt were not present, said Gibson.

After the crash the Volkswagen Jetta came to rest on its wheels in the left travel lane of I-580 facing northwest. The three lanes of I-580 northbound were shut down for several hours while the crash scene was investigated and diagramed, said Gibson. It is still unclear as to the factor which may have contributed to the crash. This area of I580 northbound has six lanes and the speed limit is 65 mph.
