Some Carson High School students enrolled in an Independent Living course got into the spirit of Thanksgiving early last week. They celebrated being thankful for friends and family by helping prepare a Thanksgiving meal for fellow students, staff and administrators. As part of the activity, special needs students worked with several other students, or “peer tutors,” who helped assist in coaching the life skills.
The Alternative Standards Program (ASP) at Carson High School is dedicated to equipping students with practical tools for independence and success. With the assistance of some parents and educators, students learn life skills like cooking, place setting, cleaning and many other skills essential for everyday living.
“Our goal is to give students the opportunity to develop skills they can use in everyday life,” said Lance Hendee, ASP/Special Education teacher at Carson High. “Cooking a Thanksgiving meal allows them to practice with their peers everything from following a recipe to time management, all while building confidence in the kitchen.”
For the last five years, the activity has become a tradition at Carson High School. Parents, families, educators and friends have helped make the event possible with turkeys, gravy, rolls, mash potatoes, stuffing, yams, corn, salads, pies, etc.
To help offset the costs, the ASP and Special Education Departments at Carson High will host a Silent Auction and Bake Sale Fundraiser Friday, Dec. 13, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. in the Carson High Library.
