The Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving food baskets will benefit from the third annual Battle of the Bars Turkey Drive. Carson City area bars and taverns have been collecting turkeys since October. On Saturday, Lt. Mark Cyr took several soldiers and volunteers from The Salvation Army out “bar hopping” collecting turkeys to help out needy families.
Ed’s Doghouse at 330 Airport Road placed first place for the third year in a row with 44 turkeys. Crossroad”s Lounge at 300 E. Winnie Lane placed second donating 22 turkeys while Espolon at 10115 Highway 50 in Mound House placed third donating 16 turkeys.
Twisted Spoke donated five and Firkin and Fox, four turkeys. This turkey drive along with other turkey and food drives has provided more than 1,200 turkeys to be distributed through The Salvation Army and other agencies working together to provide holiday assistance to disadvantaged families.
The next “Battle of the Bars” will be for toys to help support The Salvation Army Angel Tree program. Several local bars have started collecting toys and will continue until Dec. 12.
If you would like your bar or tavern to participate you can contact the organizations office at 775-887-9120 for details and to be added to the list.
Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army’s highest profile Christmas efforts. Through The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program, food boxes and Christmas gifts are provided for disadvantaged children from infants to age 17.
Angel Trees and Barrels are placed in area stores during the first part of November most of December. Community members purchase items for children and return the gifts to the store where the angel tree or barrels are located. All toys are given to local children in need.
Donations can be made at The Salvation Army’s 661 Colorado St. location up through December 24th or online at carsoncitysalarmy.org as well.
