With schools out next week for the holiday, several Carson City School District students got into the spirit of Thanksgiving this week by participating in various heartwarming meals, potlucks, turkey bingo night and turkey trots.

Pre-K students at Seeliger Elementary School hosted a “Family Feast Potluck” where families were first entertained with musical performances from the students and then later enjoyed an assorted buffet of family favorites. A similar event was held at Fritsch Elementary where kindergartens sampled traditional Thanksgiving favorites.

The fifth-grade leadership team at Empire Elementary hosted a Turkey Bingo fundraiser last night at their school. The holiday-focused event fostered parent engagement and brought families together at school with their children, connecting them with teachers and allowing them to become involved in their child’s learning.

Additionally, Carson High students enrolled in an Independent Living course celebrated being thankful for friends and family by helping prepare a full-fledged Thanksgiving meal for fellow students, staff and administrators. As part of the activity, special needs students worked with several other students, or “peer tutors,” who helped assist in coaching the life skills.

The Alternative Standards Program (ASP) at Carson High School helps to equip students with practical tools for independence and success. With the assistance of some parents and educators, students learn life skills like cooking, place setting, cleaning and many other skills essential for everyday living.

For the last six years, the holiday activity has become a tradition at Carson High School. Parents, families, educators and friends helped make the event possible with turkeys, gravy, rolls, mash potatoes, stuffing, yams, corn, salads, pies, etc.
