Each year, nearly 4 million dogs in the U.S. enter animal shelters. Each year, up to 40% never find a home. Luckily, at Nevada Humane Society that is not the case — but still, there are plenty of dogs who need a home this October during Adopt a Shelter Dog month.
“We’re raising awareness for dogs in our shelter and nationwide — asking people to adopt now more than ever. The intolerable numbers of dogs — pets, really — who enter shelters each year and are euthanized for not having a home is tragic. Though here at NHS we save over 94 percent of animals that come through our doors we still need your help to make an even bigger difference,” said Kimberly Wade, Senior Manager of Communications and Events for Nevada Humane Society.
Nevada Humane Society will see nearly 10,000 animals enter its shelter this year and the mission of providing care and finding homes is not over. As just one person, you can make that difference, so why not start now, during Adopt a Shelter Dog month?
One immediate way to help is to join Nevada Humane Society for DOGtoberfest, an ASPCA Mega Match-a-thon event presented by Subaru. Happening this weekend only, October 17 through October 19, all dogs and cats (puppies and kittens included) can be adopted for just $20 — though cats over the age of three are free! You can adopt at one of three locations:
— At the NHS shelter on Longley Lane from 11a.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Saturday
— At PetSmart on South Virginia Street from 12-5 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday
— At Legends at Sparks Marina from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
“The goal of DOGtoberfest is to place 125 animals into loving homes and raise awareness for pet homelessness across the country. Will you join us in doing so?” said Wade.
All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. For more information, call 775-856-2000 or visit www.nevadahumanesociety.org.
