The Town of Gardnerville has observed an algae bloom at Mountain View Pond, located at the south end of Snaffle Bit Drive. The algae appears to be a type of cyanobacteria, which can sometimes produce toxins that are harmful to people and animals. The Town is currently working with the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection to determine whether this bloom poses a health risk. Test results are expected within approximately two weeks.

For Your Safety, until test results are received, please:

Avoid all contact with pond water.
Do not allow dogs or other pets to swim in the pond.
Do not allow pets to drink pond water.
Keep children away from the water’s edge.

Warning signs have been posted around the pond to alert visitors of these precautions.

Background
The last suspected harmful algal bloom at Mountain View Pond occurred in 2021. Testing at that time found that while the algae had the potential to produce toxins, the risk was considered relatively low because cell counts were moderate and did not meet bloom conditions. The Town is hopeful that current testing will produce similar results.

The Town will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
