Nevada Day Inc. is asking families across the Silver State to share their favorite Nevada tall tales for the America 250 – America 300 Time Capsule.

The digital time capsule will preserve the stories, memories, and traditions of Nevada families in 2026 for the people who open it decades from now.

Every Nevada family has a story like this. It gets told around the dinner table and grows a little bigger every time someone repeats it. It might be a legendary road trip, a strange encounter in the desert, a family prank, an old Nevada tradition, or a story that begins, “Now, I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but…”

“Nevada has history, and Nevada has legends, but a lot of our best stories have never been written down,” said Jennell Peck, President of the Nevada Day Inc. Board of Directors. “They live in our families. Maybe the story is true, maybe it’s mostly true, or maybe Grandpa’s version has changed a little over the years. Those are exactly the stories we want to save.”

The call for stories ties in with this year’s Nevada Day Parade theme, Pumpkins, Pioneers & Tall Tales. The parade will take place Saturday, Oct. 31, in Carson City.

How to Participate
Families can submit their tall tale online at NevadaDay.com/time-capsule-america-250.

The form has space to write out the story and an option to upload a photo or scan that goes with it. Nevada Day asks storytellers to include:

  • Who told it: the family member the story came from
  • Where it happened: the Nevada town, road, mine, ranch, or landmark
  • What generation it came from: how far back the story goes

Submissions close Oct. 30, 2026.

The time capsule initiative, From America 250 to America 300, launched on July 4, 2026. It gathers contributions from sponsors, businesses, veterans groups, school classrooms, and the general public, creating a record of Nevada life in the nation’s 250th year.

“Years from now, someone will open this time capsule and find out what Nevada families were talking about in 2026,” said Peck. “Let’s give them something worth reading. So come on, Nevada, tell us your tall tale!”
