Gusty winds and low humidity Friday has promoted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Carson City, surrounding counties and portions of the eastern Sierra.
The Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. and is for Carson City, Lyon, Washoe, Douglas, Storey and Mineral counties in western Nevada and southern Lassen and northern Mono counties in California.
Winds will be out of the southwest to west 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, forecasters said. Humidity will be as low as 17 percent in the afternoon. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to grow rapidly in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to follow local fire restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires.

There’s also a Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for Lake Tahoe, Boca and Stampede reservoirs, Frenchman Lake and Honey Lake.
The weather service advises that strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft. Those headed to the lakes should consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.
