Tuesday morning gives early risers the week’s first good show. Look east before dawn for the very thin crescent Moon beside brilliant Jupiter, with reddish Mars higher in the same general stretch of sky. The Moon and Jupiter pass less than a degree apart later in the day, and from some parts of the United States the Moon will actually pass in front of Jupiter in a daytime occultation. The much easier northern Nevada view is before sunrise, when the pair can be enjoyed safely with the naked eye or binoculars.
The Moon disappears into the Sun’s glare after Wednesday and becomes new over Carson City at 8:26 p.m. Thursday. That makes Thursday night through the weekend an excellent dark-sky window. A minor meteor shower, the September epsilon Perseids, also peaks around Wednesday. Its rates are modest — only a handful of meteors per hour even under good conditions — so do not expect August’s Perseids, but the nearly moonless sky gives any stragglers a fighting chance. This is also a good week to look for the Milky Way away from city lights while summer’s brighter star fields are still hanging on.
Venus remains the brilliant evening beacon low in the west, while Saturn rises in the east during the evening and stays up most of the night. Before dawn, Mars and Jupiter are both visible in the eastern sky. Mercury is too close to the Sun to be a practical target despite its importance in this week’s astrology. On Sunday evening, look west soon after sunset for the young crescent Moon beginning to close in on Venus; the two become much closer Monday. You will need a low, unobstructed western horizon because both sit close to the twilight. For Carson City stargazers, the best overall plan is simple: Jupiter and the Moon before dawn Tuesday, dark skies around Thursday’s New Moon, and the returning crescent with Venus to finish the week.
