Nevada Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Carson City to Kuwait will participate in a memorial walk/run this Tuesday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the IHOP shooting that occurred five years ago in Carson City.
On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which a mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons suffered injuries.
All three of the deceased soldiers worked at the Office of the Adjutant General on Fairview Drive in Carson City.
The Carson City walk/run is set for 7 a.m. from the IHOP to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive.
The last two runs have been attended by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval. Three months after the shooting, Sandoval and Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong were the first ones in line when IHOP re-opened, a significant moment as the Nevada Nevada Guard and the Carson City community was still coming to terms with what happened.
Elsewhere in Nevada, the Las Vegas-based 17th Sustainment Brigade will hold a run at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 PST at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait to remember those killed in 2011.
