A 49-year-old Carson City man was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the area of Sherman and North Lompa on report of a person walking in the roadway. While attempting to locate the individual, they spotted another individual kneeling behind a pickup truck near North Nye Lane and Bunch Way.
According to the report, the man was “stuffing a bag with clothing.” When the man saw the deputy, he “immediately stopped what he was doing, collected his things, got on his bicycle, and started to ride away from me.”
The report states the man was traveling on the wrong side of the road. Due to this and his “suspicious activity,” the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
However, the man did not stop. When the deputy turned on his lights and siren, the man dropped the bags of clothing, abandoning them on the road, but continued to ride away.
The deputy called for backup, and two additional deputies were dispatched as the initial deputy continued pursuit of the man on his bicycle. He rode onto a closed road with concrete barricades, and the other deputies attempted to intercept him while the reporting deputy went around to Highway 50 E.
According to the report, the deputy repeatedly directed the man to stop over his loud speaker: “While I was chasing him, I got on my vehicleโs PA system and told him to stop. I told him he was going to go to jail, but he refused all my commands. I continued to sound my siren to indicate to him I was still following him and for him to stop, but he did not.”
The reporting deputy stated that the two additional deputies were able to chase the man into a dirt field where he fell off his bicycle, and was apprehended.
He had traveled about three-quarters of a mile before he was apprehended, according to the report.
Dispatch advised the man had two extraditable warrants for contempt of court. Deputies also added an obstruction charge, likely related to the pursuit.ย
The man told deputies he was injured during the arrest. Fire department personnel evaluated him and recommended he be medically cleared at a hospital before being taken to jail, according to the report.
After clearance, he was later transported to the Carson City Jail and booked without incident. Bail: $7,137; $6,000 cash-only.
