The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit would like to remind our residents of the laws and regulations regarding Off-Road Vehicle (OHV) recreation.
Off-highway vehicle means any motorized vehicle which does not have the normal safety equipment, built to federal vehicle standards, or is otherwise built or designed for off-highway and all-terrain use.
This definition includes but is not limited to: all-terrain vehicle (ATV), off highway motorcycle (OHV), dune buggy, snowmobile, utility vehicle (UTV) also known as side-by side, or any other vehicle used on public lands for recreation.
Nevada law requires, except in limited circumstances, owners register their OHV with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
There is no minimum age or driver license requirement for OHVs to operate off-highway in Nevada. Unless the OHV is equipped with the proper safety equipment and is otherwise licensed to operate on a public road, operation of the OHV on or adjacent to a highway or city street is strictly prohibited.
As of this time Carson City does not have any designated OHV routes or trails and accordingly travel outside of OHV recreation areas is prohibited. Failure to comply with these limitations may result in arrest, a citation, or seizure of the OHV.
