A back-to-school community celebration Saturday in Carson City turned into an afternoon of summertime fun for local children and their families.

The Salvation Army hosted its free back-to-school block party, which continues until to 3 p.m. at 911 E. Second Street.

“We wanted to get our community out of the house for the afternoon to celebrate back-to-school,” said Salvation Army Capt. Sara Evans, who along with husband Ernie, son Caleb, the Salvation Army support team and volunteers, welcomed families to find some shade and enjoy the day.

With free hot dogs, refreshments and snow cones to keep cool, children and families played cornhole, played games and took turns in the Salvation Army bounce house.

Carson City students return to class Monday, August 18. Students were able to win prizes, many of which were school supplies.
