Washoe Lake is under a HAB Watch Credit: Washoe Lake State Park

Nevada Division of Environmental Protection has placed Washoe Lake north of Carson City under a Harmful Alga Bloom (HAB) Watch Advisory.

Visual and satellite imagery assessments have indicated a possible bloom. Washoe Lake State Park staff observed the potential bloom along the shoreline this week.

Water tests are currently being done by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection.

Toxic algae can cause serious health issues for humans and animals. Pets should not be allowed in the water and people are advised to swim at their own risk.

Harmful algal blooms are primarily caused by cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. The blooms are a concern in Nevada’s freshwater bodies, particularly during late summer and early fall.

Washoe Lake State Park is under a HAB Watch.

These blooms can produce toxins harmful to humans, animals, and aquatic life. The Nevada HAB Task Force provides resources and information to help the public stay safe, including advisories for specific water bodies.

If you see water that looks discolored or smells bad, stay away. Pets should be kept away from all water bodies under a HAB advisory. Go here for more information.
