The John D. Winters Centennial Park tennis courts renovation project is complete, with all eight courts open and available to the public.

The approximately $1.6 million project, built by Spanish Springs Construction, was funded by a combination of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, Quality of Life Capital, Carson City Capital Improvement Program funds, and a generous donation by the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation.

The project’s scope included the replacement of aging asphalt tennis courts with post-tension concrete courts and a new ADA ramp, increasing opportunities for park users of all ages and abilities. Concrete courts are more durable, last longer and require less on-going maintenance.

Additional improvements funded and planned at the park in the coming months include replacement of the tennis hitting wall, a new restroom building, new park signage, windscreens, and landscaping improvements around the courts. Further improvements to upper portions of the park include rehabilitation of the upper sports fields, renovation of the concession/restroom building, and drainage improvements anticipated to start this fall.

The courts are open to the public free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. For additional information about this project or the other projects planned at John D.
