Do you have an elementary school student? The topic of how much recess time students are allotted each day was discussed recently by the Carson City School District — and was a point of concern for many families worried about recess cuts.
CCSD trustees opted to keep their three recess per day policy. However, the topic opened discussions between parents about their individual schools. Some parents said their students have only been receiving two recesses per day, despite the three-recess policy, while many Washoe County families have reported their students only receive a single 20-minute recess each day.
While the state does have guidance on physical activity and play time, they don’t actually require specifics, which means districts and even individual schools can vary on how they implement recess throughout the state.
Now, a group of local parents have formed a coalition addressing what they see are the biggest issues facing students today and are asking for changes to be made at the state level.
We’ll have more on the topic in our follow up story, but first we want to know: How much recess does your student receive each day in Elementary School? Take our poll below, and stay tuned for our look into Nevada recess policies and the local parents requesting legal protections for playtime.
