A 60-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening another man with a hammer during an argument over a cell phone, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Following an investigation, sheriff’s deputies arrested Richard Paul Carter. According to the booking report, deputies responded at 6:52 a.m. to a Brown Street address for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

A deputy spoke with the victim who stated Carter wanted him to give a cell phone back. The victim stated the suspect picked up a hammer and began walking toward him, saying something to the effect of “I’m going to beat your f**king ass,” the report states.

The victim said he feared for his safety, locked himself in his bedroom and called law enforcement. He stayed in his room until deputies arrived.

A deputy spoke with the suspect outside the residence and asked him to explain what happened. The suspect stated he was working on the garbage disposal in the kitchen while he was arguing with the man. He stated he was arguing about getting paid back for a cell phone. The suspect stated he had been telling the man to leave the home for a couple days, the report states.

The suspect stated he got angry because the man said he was not going to leave the home. The suspect stated that is when he left the kitchen area and walked through the living room, where he picked up a hammer off a chair.

The suspect stated he walked down the hallway with the hammer in his hand toward the man and said something to the effect of “get the f**k out” and “I’ll beat your f**cking ass,” the report states.

The suspect stated he spoke with dispatch and they told him to stand outside and wait while deputies arrived on scene, according to the report.

Based on the victim’s statement and the suspect’s admission of walking toward the victim with a hammer in his hand while making verbal threats, the suspect was arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail: $15,000.
