A Carson City man was jailed Wednesday on felony assault and child endangerment charges after officers responded to an apartment complex where the suspect allegedly said he was going to throw his infant into a swimming pool, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

David Daniel Torres was taken into custody at around 8 p.m., following a brief pursuit with officers, in which a deputy was injured while attempting to reach a screaming victim inside a South Saliman Road apartment.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the 400 block of South Saliman. As an arriving deputy was walking up a stairwell to the apartment, Torres threw a BMX-style bicycle at him, then ran inside the apartment and locked the door.

Deputies could hear a woman screaming from inside of the apartment, and attempted to kick the front door several times, with one deputy able to see Torres holding the door shut. Deputies gained access, entering the apartment and saw that Torres had jumped from the second floor balcony, then ran toward Fifth Street, then jumped the fence.

Deputies searched a storage area in the 1300 block of East Fifth Street, with a sheriff’s sergeant finding Torres in the southeast corner of a complex. The officer told the man to come out. The man refused to comply with orders and said he had a gun.

Torres then attempted to run northbound, with a sergeant able to strike him with a baton. The man continued to run, yelling that he had a gun. At one point, he turned toward an officer again, stating he had a gun and yelled bang and pointed a cell phone at him, the arrest report states. Another deputy deployed a taser on the man. He was taken into custody and to the hospital after being tasered.

Deputies made contact with the woman inside, who stated she is the girlfriend of Torres and they have a newborn baby together. She stated Torres had been inside the home, drinking all day and was acting erratically, making threats and saying he was going to throw their infant child in the swimming pool.

A warrant check on Torres shows that he is on Alternative Sentencing with several conditions. He faces the following charges: Assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, gross misdemeanor child neglect and endangerment, resisting an officer, obstructing and two counts, violation of probation conditions. Bail: $30,049.

In other arrests, a 55-year-old woman was jailed on felony robbery and assault charges after attempting to hold up a cashier at the Dollar Tree in the 2700 block of North Carson Street, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Diane Marie Springfield is being held on $60,000 bail. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the location after a report of a robbery in progress. Dispatch advised the officers were taking a 911 call from a customer inside the store who said a woman was threatening a clerk with a pair of scissors and demanding money from the cash register.

Officers arrived on scene and found the woman with a pair of scissors in her right hand. The woman had her back toward the deputy and was pointing the scissors in the direction of the store clerk. The deputy commanded the woman to drop the scissors and get down on the ground. The woman complied and was detained by a sheriff’s sergeant.

The store clerk confirmed the woman had entered the store, attempted to purchase a pair of scissors with change. She placed the change on the counter and then began to threaten the clerk shouting “give me the money,” the arrest report states. The clerk said the woman was jabbing the scissors at him while demanding money.

The woman told officers she had been released from Behavioral Health Services and had been taking medication for heart and mental health issues.
