A 36-year-old Carson City man faces multiple charges including felony child abuse, being a felon in possession of a stun gun, domestic battery and being an ex-felon failing to register, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Joseph Andrew Crump was taken into custody at 9:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of North Carson Street following an investigation that began after dispatch received calls of a man screaming at his 5-year-old daughter and a female screaming “get off of her Joey,” the arrest report states.

The arresting deputy activated his department issued body camera and recorded the incident interviews. According to his report, the deputy located the mother and her five-year-old daughter inside a motel room. The five-year-old was crying and upset. The mother confirmed her husband, suspect Crump, was upset with the girl because she was playing in the parking lot.

The girl’s mother told the officer that she asked Crump to leave and she said he did without incident. The deputy told the mother that there was a witness who heard her screaming “get off of her.” The mother told the officer she saw the suspect kick at something in the corner of the room while he was yelling at the girl but thought it was a pillow, the arrest report states.

Deputies observed red marks and a scratch on the back of the girl’s right leg. The officer asked the girl, who was visibly upset and shaken, what happened and the girl replied “daddy hit me,” the arrest report states. The mother then stated that her daughter had fallen earlier and hit her leg on the bed frame.

The deputy states in the report that he was uncomfortable and suspicious that the mother was trying to influence her daughter into believing she fell and hit the bed frame. The deputy asked to the mother to speak to the officer outside and to not try to influence the girl.

The officer again asked the child, who remained upset and shaken, what happened. The girl showed the officer to the corner of the room next to the bed which it appeared the girl slept on the floor. When asked how the injury occurred on her leg, the girl replied “daddy kicked me,” the arrest report states.

Photos were taken of the injury to the girl’s leg.

A reporting person to the incident said he heard the two adults screaming at each other and the female scream “get off her.” He said he also her the woman telling the man “I’m taking pictures to show my mother,” and “you’re a psycho,” the arrest report states.

Crump was read his Miranda warning and was asked about the incident. He did confirm yelling at the girl but denied touching her. He was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and domestic battery.

As he was being patted down, he advised he had a cell phone in his pocket. The officer removed it and, during later inspection, learned the cell phone turned out to be a disguised stun gun. The deputy reviewed Crump’s lengthy criminal history, which included six felony convictions in Oregon. He was asked why he was not registered as felon in Carson City. He advised he was never told he had to register, the arrest report states. Bail: $40,000.
