Teddy is a beautiful round-faced man of mystery. While we don’t know much about his past, we know one thing for certain: this special blue-gray gentleman is ready to close the book on his wandering days and settle into the happy ending he deserves.

Estimated to be 5 to 6 years old, Teddy is a big, beautiful short-haired neutered male with a striking blue-gray coat and an equally big personality.  About nine months ago, he appeared at Washoe County animal control as a stray with no clues about where he came from or what life had been like before.

After being neutered and vaccinated, Teddy headed to a Reno shelter, where everyone hoped he would adapt and quickly find a family. Instead, shelter life seemed to break his spirit. He slipped into a deep depression, refusing to eat and withdrawing from people and other cats. Watching such a big guy become so small inside was heartbreaking.

Fortunately, Teddy caught the eye of a kind-hearted woman who decided to rescue him from the shelter and give him a chance. Once in a home environment, Teddy blossomed. He became happier, more social, and showed everyone glimpses of the cat he truly was beneath the sadness.

But as it turned out, Teddy came with a few strong opinions.

While he adored the humans in his new home, he made his feelings about dogs very clear: absolutely not. Teddy is terrified of dogs and firmly believes that the best defense is a good offense. Any canine crossing his path instantly becomes Public Enemy Number One, creating a stressful and unsafe situation for the resident dog.

Then there was the resident cat. Teddy wasn’t unfriendly—he simply arrived with the enthusiasm of a wrecking ball. He loves to play and approaches life with gusto. Unfortunately, his small and timid feline housemate found Teddy’s larger-than-life personality a bit overwhelming and retreated into hiding.

His family tried everything for months, hoping everyone would adjust. But sometimes love also means recognizing when a situation just isn’t working. Eventually, with heavy hearts, they brought Teddy to Catmandu so he could find a home better suited to who he is.

Since arriving with us, Teddy has shown that he can coexist with cats, but we suspect his dream home would be one where he doesn’t have to share the spotlight. He would likely thrive as the only animal in the household, where he can fully embrace his role as king of the castle.

And Teddy takes that role seriously.

He loves to eat, loves to play, and greatly enjoys affection and attention from his people. He can be a little cautious with strangers at first, but once he decides you are part of his circle, his warm and loving side shines through. He also has some surprisingly easygoing qualities: Teddy is comfortable in carriers and doesn’t mind car rides—a rare skill in the feline world.

After spending much of his recent life bouncing between uncertainty and change, Teddy is hoping for something simple: a place to put down roots, a family to call his own, and people who will love and adore him for exactly who he is.

If you’ve been searching for one big, handsome cat with a giant personality and an even bigger heart, Teddy may be waiting just for you.
