On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the United States Marshals Service located Twyla Defond and Abbygale Smith, who had been reported missing during an ongoing Lyon County Sheriff’s Office investigation.
Since receiving the initial report, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division has been actively working in coordination with the United States Marshals Service and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to locate Twyla and Abbygale and ensure the child’s safety.
Twyla and Abbygale were located in Reno, Nevada. Twyla was taken into custody on her outstanding arrest warrant without incident. Abbygale was located in good health, and steps are currently being taken to ensure she is placed in a safe environment.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the public for the assistance and information provided throughout this investigation. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office also extends its appreciation to the United States Marshals Service and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and partnership in bringing this case to a safe resolution.
