Another day of strong and gusty winds is expected through late Monday afternoon, with gusts 45-55 mph for areas of western Nevada, gusts 65-plus mph for wind prone areas and enhanced gusts of 80 to 100 mph, prompting the National Weather Service to extend a Wind Advisory through 5 p.m. for Carson City and surrounding counties.

As of around 5:30 a.m. NV Energy reports power outages in Carson City with 144 customers, 1,127 in Douglas County and 733 customers without power in Washoe County.

Forecasters advise Sierra ridge gusts could exceed 80 mph at times and that motorists can expect travel impacts due to crosswinds for high profile vehicles, along with areas of reduced visibility due to blowing dust for areas of downwind of dry lake beds and desert sinks.

Southwest winds will be from 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph with gusting up to 65 mph in wind prone areas, except for some enhanced gusts of 80 to 100 mph through mid-morning along parts of I-580/US-395 south of Reno through Washoe Valley, according to NWS forecasters.

There is a potential for power outages, snapped tree limbs, especially in the Davis Fire burn area. Difficult driving conditions are expected for high profile vehicles.

Parts of I-580 between Reno and Carson City could be hazardous for all travel through this morning, forecasters said, noting there will be a lull in the winds but then increasing in the afternoon.

Strong and gusty winds are expected Sunday into Monday around Carson City and surrounding counties, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory.

Forecasters say there’s potential for widespread southwest winds of 20 mph to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph for most areas and around 65 mph for wind prone areas.

The Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday for the greater Reno, Carson City Carson Valley, Lyon and Storey County areas as well as the greater Lake Tahoe area and Sierra.

Weather service forecasters advise now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away.

The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage, NWS forecasters said.
