UPDATE: A preliminary 5.5 to 5.7 magnitude earthquake centered southeast of Silver Springs and 15.7 miles southwest of Fallon shook the region Monday at 6:29 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. As of 7:55 p.m. there have been 43 aftershocks, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

It was widely felt around Carson City and surrounding counties. The Nevada Seismological Laboratory reports the earthquake was 5.49 in magnitude and is still under investigation. As the USGS and the UNR Laboratory attempt to gather and review the correct magnitude, USGS had upgraded its initial detection to 5.7 magnitude but revised it to a 5.5 magnitude and then upgraded again back to 5.7.

Within a second of the earthquake happening, many received an emergency notice on their phone advising of earthquake detection. Injuries and damage estimates are unknown at this time. There are no reports of injuries or damage at this time in Carson City, according to dispatch.

Lyon County Emergency Management released the following:

At approximately 6:29 p.m. this evening, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Silver Springs, Nevada just southeast of Lahontan Reservoir. Initial reports indicate that there are no significant damages or injuries at this time.

Lyon County Emergency Management immediately activated coordination efforts with local public safety agencies, utilities, school districts, and healthcare facilities. At this time, no major damage has been reported to critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, transportation systems, or utility services.

Out of an abundance of caution, response crews will continue conducting comprehensive damage assessments throughout Lyon County over the next several days. These assessments are intended to identify any potential impacts that may not be immediately visible, particularly to roads, bridges, water systems, and other essential services.

Lyon County Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
