Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program and Big 5 Sporting Goods continued with a 10-year tradition on Wednesday with the donation of 297 pairs of shoes from the store and 125 pairs from community organizations.

Peggy Sweetland with the Students in Transition Program through the Carson City School District noted the shoes go to students from families who may not be able to afford new ones.
There are more than 570 pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 students who qualified with McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program for the 2015-16 school year.

The Carson City School District Warehouse team picked up the shoes from Big 5 Sporting Goods and delivered them to each school.

For Big Five, the shoe program is a tradition the store gets behind annually, said Scott Norris, manager of Big Five Sporting Goods located at 4219 South Carson Street.

“We think it’s a great opportunity to help out our community,” he said.
