The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has released the 2026-2030 Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP), a statewide, data-driven strategy to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

From 2019 to 2023, Nevada recorded 1,606 fatalities and 6,948 serious injuries on its roadways. The updated SHSP uses this crash data to guide targeted safety strategies designed to address Nevada’s highest-risk crash factors.

Nevada is striving for a 35 percent reduction in fatal and serious injury crashes by 2035, with a long-term goal of zero fatalities by 2050.

The SHSP unites transportation agencies, law enforcement, public health officials, emergency responders, and community partners in a coordinated effort to implement engineering improvements, strengthen enforcement, expand education campaigns, and improve emergency response.

Progress is tracked through five federally-required Safety Performance Measures reported annually to the Federal Highway Administration, including:

  • Number of fatalities
  • Number of serious injuries
  • Fatality rate
  • Serious injury rate
  • Number of non-motorized fatalities and serious injuries

The SHSP is updated every five years to reflect current crash data, emerging trends, and proven safety strategies. Nevada’s traffic safety planning began in 2004 with the formation of a Technical Working Group within NDOT’s Traffic Safety Engineering Division. That collaborative foundation continues today through coordination with the Nevada Executive Committee on Traffic Safety (NECTS).

NDOT and partners are working toward a safer transportation system for all, including vulnerable road users, through targeted infrastructure improvements, public outreach, and coordinated safety initiatives.

As a reminder, traffic safety is a shared responsiblity. Every driver, every pedestrian, every bicyclist and motorcyclist is reminded to safely share the road. Put the distractions and poor road behaviors aside and focus on being traffic safe! Traffic safety information and tips: zerofatalitiesnv.com
