By CCSO Sgt. Steven Olson — The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring safe, lawful, and peaceful demonstrations at the State Capital. We encourage all participants to exercise their right to free speech responsibly and in accordance with local laws.
Our key priorities are:
Peaceful Assembly:
- We urge all attendees to remain nonviolent and respectful to fellow demonstrators and to be cooperative with law enforcement.
Safety for Pedestrians:
- Do not walk in the roadway along the bicycle lanes and stay on the sidewalk or curbing.
- Use the marked crosswalks to cross the road. Step into the crosswalk only when it is safe to do so. Do not dart into the road. Please do not linger in the crosswalk.
- Drivers may be distracted by the signs and flags. Make eye contact with them before you cross.
- Do not hang or drape your flags or signs in the bike lane and roadway. They cause an obstruction in the road.
Safety for Vehicle Traffic:
- Driver’s should anticipate that people are crossing the road.
- Do not drive with your cell phone or electronic device in your hand.
- Do not stop and obstruct the flow of traffic to confront demonstrators.
- Consider and plan ahead for possible delays in commute time.
- Make sure you and your passengers are wearing seatbelts.
