The Carson High varsity boys basketball team put the finishing touches on an unbeaten regular season by defeating the Douglas Tigers, 65-49 Friday night, ending league play with a perfect 16-0 record in the Sierra League.
Carson also finished the season 14-5 overall. It had not lost a game since before Christmas.
The Senators led for much of Friday night’s season finale, up 13-10 after the opening period and in seemingly in command by 12 points, 30-18, at the half. Carson outscored the host Tigers 17-8 in the second period.
Douglas, however, clawed its way back into the game in the third period, going on a 22-13 run and closing the gap to within three points, 43-40, by the start of the fourth and final quarter of play.
But that’s when the Senators kicked their play up a notch into high gear, outscoring Douglas 22-9 down the stretch.
Asa Carter, Tez Allen, and Jayden DeJoseph all tied for the team-high 18 points apiece in leading Carson High to the win. Jared Rooker added nine points for the Senators.
The Senators now eye the post-season as champions of the Northern Division I Sierra League.
Tournament play for the NIAA Northern Division I regional playoffs begins Wednesday, Feb. 17, with opening-round games played at host schools, which are to be determined. Semifinals and finals will be held at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
Bracket play is to be announced.
