Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties next breakfast meeting is Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street, Silver Springs, Nev. Guest speakers for the February public meeting are from EMPOWERED and Nevada Care Connection.
Jack Minshew, Nevada Care Connection’s Outreach and Community Partner Manager, will give an overview of NVCC, which is administered by the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division with the purpose of improving access to services and supports. He will take questions after he describes programs such as Medicare Assistance Program, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, Senior Medicare Patrol, and the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act, among others.
Roseman University College of Medicine’s EMPOWERED program supports pregnant and postpartum individuals who use or have used opioids or stimulants for any reason. Shanon Lepe of Roseman University will give an overview of the program, which is designed to empower individuals to be prepared for the birth of their babies, and to thrive as a caregiver. EMPOWERED is a recovery-oriented program that combines medications for opioid use disorder with education, counseling, and peer support services and aims to manage the social determinants of health (SDOH) of program participants and their families. The program intends to combat multiple facets of substance misuse and improve birth outcomes.
The Coalition’s bimonthly breakfast meetings include insightful discussions and updates about collaborative, multi-sector efforts to increase access to healthcare, nutritious food, and workforce development while addressing substance use prevention.
