A weather system moving into the region will bring a chance of snow showers for Carson City and surrounding counties this weekend, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory by the National Weather Service.

The advisory is from 7 a.m. Saturday until Sunday, 4 p.m. for the Greater Reno, Carson City, Lyon County, Carson Valley areas and Lake Tahoe Basin.

Forecasters advise that snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are possible with with up to 8 inches for foothill areas and Virginia City.

The incoming system will bring colder temperatures, brisk northeast winds with snow chances persisting through the weekend.

For Carson City and lower valleys, snow shows are possible, (around 60 percent) mainly after 4 p.m. Saturday, with showers continuing again after 1 a.m. On Sunday, there’s a 40 percent chance of snow showers, mainly before 4 pm., with a 20 percent chance Sunday evening. Monday will bring a 20 percent chance of snow showers after 10 a.m. then turning sunny. Tuesday will be sunny with highs in the low 40s.

For the Lake Tahoe Basin, snow showers are likely Saturday, mainly after 1 p.m. and will continue through the evening, with snow showers after 1 a.m., NWS forecasters said. Sunday will see a 50 percent chance of snow showers, extending into the evening, with Monday bringing a 20 percent chance of snow showers. Tuesday will be sunny with temperatures in the mid-30s.
