Earlier this month, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong released the 2024 crime statistics, which showed a 9% overall decline in crime, with a total of 2,480 incidents reported (down from 2,716 in 2023).

Part of the statistics included the top ten call types broken down by hourly ranges, which typically were welfare checks, unwanted subjects, and suspicious vehicle reports.

It also broke down the top ten call locations into hourly groups: a 24 hour period, midnight to 8 a.m., 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. to midnight.

As a note: this does not mean that these locations have the most crime in Carson City, rather they received the most calls per address. As the most calls for the year related to welfare checks, suspicious vehicles and unwanted subjects, it’s likely many of these calls pertained to those top three reasons.

In total, the top ten locations together received 9% of all 20,075 calls, and out of the top ten calls for service, only one type (domestic dispute) included violence against another person.

Number One: Carson Tahoe Hospital campus, 1600 Medical Parkway

Across the board, the number one call location in Carson City requesting law enforcement services was Carson Tahoe Hospital, located at 1600 Medical Parkway. Over the course of the year, deputies were called 581 times to the hospital, with nearly half of all calls occurring between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Number Two: Walmart shopping center, 3200 Market Street

The second highest location for calls was Walmart, located at 3200 Market Street, bringing in 217 calls for service throughout 2024. Calls were fairly even during operating hours, bringing in 104 calls between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 98 calls from 4 p.m. to midnight.

Number Three: Mills Park, 1111 E. William Street

The third highest location for calls was at Mills Park, located at 1111 E. William Street. The park, which some say is the city’s most popular, brought in 186 calls for service in 2024. The majority of calls (80) came in between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., which reduced by almost half to 42 calls between midnight and 8 a.m.

Number Four: The Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street

The Carson Nugget, located at 507 N. Carson Street, received the fourth highest calls for service coming in at 182. Their position within the top ten is the most drastically changed between time periods, coming in at the second highest slot from midnight to 8 a.m., but dropping to the tenth slot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., then creeping back up to 6th place between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Number Five: Smith’s Grocery and Pharmacy, 599 E. William Street

Smith’s Grocery and Pharmacy, located at 599 E. William Street, holds the midway point in the top ten with 169 total calls for service. From midnight to 8 a.m., they received the least calls for service in the top ten at only 21 calls, but rose to fourth place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 66 calls for service, then rising to third place from 4 p.m. to midnight with 82 calls for service.

Number Six: Parkway Plaza Apartments, 20 College Parkway

The sixth highest location for calls for service is the only residential property in the list, which goes to Parkway Plaza Apartments located at 20 College Parkway. All of their calls within the top ten list fell between 4 p.m. and midnight (61 calls) and midnight and 8 a.m. (37 calls). They did not make it into the top ten for the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. slot.

Number Seven: Carson Tahoe Health Specialty Medical Center, 775 Fleischmann Way

Coming in at seventh place is the Carson Tahoe Health Specialty Medical Center at 775 Fleischmann Way, with 113 calls for service. The Specialty Medical Center is home to several care centers, including Mallory Behavioral Health Crisis Center, Center for Wound Healing, Continuing Care, Outpatient Services, and Behavioral Health. The majority of the calls for service to the campus were from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (54), but spread somewhat evenly throughout the 24 hour period.

Number Eight: Gold Dust West Casino, 2171 E. William Street

For the eighth slot, Gold Dust West Casino, located at 2717 E. William Street, brought in an even 100 calls for service during 2024. The majority of calls (44) came in between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., followed by 4 p.m. and midnight (32), with the least amount of calls (24) occurring from midnight to 8 a.m., interestingly opposite from its other casino counterpart on the list.

Number Nine: Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street

The Carson City Library holds the second to last highest calls for service in the top 10, with 85 total calls during 2024. However, the distribution of the calls throughout the 24 period were low enough as to not make it onto the top ten breakdowns by hourly period, so it’s unknown which hourly slot received the most calls for this location.

Number Ten: Costco Wholesale, 700 Old Clear Creek Road

In the top ten battle between Casinos and Grocery Stores, Costco Wholesale located at 700 Old Clear Creek Road brings the total grocery stores in the top ten to three, against the two casinos. Costco brought in 78 total calls during 2024, the majority of which (48) occurred between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Notable contenders in hourly top ten breakdowns:

Some of the above locations only accumulated their overall calls during the daytime or nighttime slots, leaving room for other locations to fill the gaps. These additional five locations made it into the top ten during their daytime, evening or nighttime groups, but did not accumulate enough total calls to make it into the overall top ten list.

Eagle Valley Golf Course, 3999 Centennial Park Drive

Note: 3999 Centennial Park Drive is registered to Eagle Valley Golf Course but very well could be used for calls to the east Carson City park at large. This address took the fifth slot for calls made between midnight and 8 a.m., with a total of 31 calls during that time period. They also hold the ninth slot in the 4 p.m. to midnight calls, with 29 calls made during that time period.

Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, 301 N. Carson Street

Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, located at 301 N. Carson Street, is the first bar on the list, taking the sixth spot for highest calls between midnight and 8 a.m. with 30 calls during that time period.

1750 N. Deer Run Road

The seventh highest slot for midnight to 8 a.m. goes to 1750 N. Deer Run Road, which is peculiar as it does not seem to be any sort of developed location. However, it is in the general area of the Ambrose Nature Reserve,  Brunswick Canyon Road, and accessible areas to the Carson River. This brought in a total of 26 calls for service during that time period.

Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road

Carson High School, located at 1111 N. Saliman Road, received the sixth highest calls for service during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. time period, resulting in 48 total calls during 2024.

FISH, 138 E. Long Street

The Friends in Service Helping (FISH) Thrift store and campus accounted for the eighth highest call slot during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. time period with 46 total calls during 2024.

Location by type:

For those locations in the Top Ten Calls for Service, making up 1,831 total calls, the location type breakdowns are as follows:

  • Healthcare facilities: 38%
  • Grocery/Retail stores: 25%
  • Community spaces: 15%
  • Casinos: 15%
  • Apartments: 6%
  • Bars: 2%

And;

  • Homeless shelter: 7% of daytime calls only; did not make the top ten overall list
  • Schools: 7% of daytime calls only; did not make the top ten overall list
