Preschoolers in the Carson City School District are receiving free vision screenings offered by the Carson City Host Lions Club from Jan. 13 to Jan. 16.

This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the nursing staff of the Carson City School District, aims to support early detection of vision issues, contributing to the health and well-being of approximately 150 preschoolers across the district’s six elementary schools. The Dayton Valley Lions Club is also joining the effort, providing additional support for these screenings.

The vision screenings are part of a larger national initiative spearheaded by LionsUSA, an affiliate of Lions International. Across the United States, Lions are working to preserve vision and improve eye health for children and adults alike.

This week holds special significance for Lions worldwide as it coincides with the birthday of Lions International Founder Melvin Jones on January 13, 1879. Jones, a visionary salesman from Chicago, founded Lions International over a century ago, igniting a global service movement that now encompasses more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries.

“Vision is essential to learning and development,” said Terry Rubald, a member of the Carson City Host Lions Club. “By screening children early, we can identify and address potential issues, helping them succeed in school and beyond.”

The Carson City Host Lions Club remains committed to serving the local community, inspired by Melvin Jones’ enduring legacy of kindness and service.
