Tonight was supposed to be the time to bundle up, put handwarmers in your gloves and gather family and friends to venture downtown to enjoy one of Carson City’s most beloved traditions and the official kick-off to the holiday season.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

Embrace your holiday spirit with favorite Christmas and holiday music, including Nutcracker, Let it Go, Sleigh Ride, Carol of the Clocks, and O Holy Night. Featuring Ben Gallagher and Alissa Teachout on piano and percussion, tenor vocalist Adam Teachout, and Angelese Pepper on cello. This concert is for families and individuals of all ages. Are you dreaming of a far away place where snowflakes, bonbons and sugarplum fairies come to life? Pinkerton Ballet Theatre is pleased to present the 31st Anniversary of The Nutcracker Ballet featuring a live orchestra Thanksgiving weekend at the Carson City Community Center.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, June 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

To be discussed are funding, contract purchases, grants, special event costs, and more.

As we approach the holiday season and Christmas draws nigh, let us share with you some Christmas memories.

Both Ron and James grew up in the same area of the country, albeit at different times. Ron grew up in the 1950s and 1960s in a small town in Illinois across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. James grew up during the 1970s in a suburban area of the city on the Missouri side of the river. James’s mother even attended the high school that was the arch-rival to Ron’s in his sports, cross-country and track.

Upon exiting the final dress rehearsal for the Pinkerton Ballet Nutcracker Friday afternoon, we were fortunate to see a hawk with its prey on the stairs in front of the Carson City Community Center.

Just like that, the end of a long holiday weekend is nigh. But the spirit of the season is just getting started. You can find it all around Carson City on Sunday.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday may be behind us, but Small Business Saturday is still ahead. Today consider shopping local to support small businesses in Carson City and surrounding communities. Small business Saturday deals can be found inside the Carson Mall, in downtown Carson City and at small businesses throughout the Nevada state capital.

Welcome to your windy Friday, Nov. 23, 2018 the day after Thanksgiving. We hope your Turkey Day was a memorable one with enough leftovers to last through the weekend. If you're looking for holiday bargains today and Saturday, there's plenty of them to go around. Today is known as "Black Friday" the official launch of the holiday shopping season and Small Business Saturday, where independently owned restaurants, shops, art galleries, merchants and speciality stores urge all to shop and buy locally.

Pinkerton Ballet Theatre presents the 30th anniversary of The Nutcracker Ballet featuring a live orchestra in Carson City this Thanksgiving weekend.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, 2018 at 7 p.m., and a matinee on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, Bob Boldrick Theater.

Following are all of the entries for the 2018 Nevada Day Parade, to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The parade starts at North Carson and William streets, and ends at South Carson and Stewart streets. There are 215 entries in this year's parade.

Great news for Carson High School students as Librarian Ananda Campbell is making sure her library stays cutting edge.

Campbell was awarded both the Library Services and Technology Act Community Enrichment Grant from the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Carson City School District Schools Foundation Mini Grant Teacher Award to help fund Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Projects and to assist in facilitating an ever-changing CHS Senators Library Collaborative Learning area.

“Peanutcracker – The Story In A Nutshell,” is a kid-sized version of the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” told in 45-minutes by 50 local school school children. Performed by Sierra Nevada Ballet, there will be performances Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, you’ll see twinkling lights appearing everywhere. Carson City doesn’t light up our downtown until next Friday, but if you need an immediate fix of holiday decorations, Minden has got you covered. Candy Cane Lane at the Carson Valley Inn is a custom outdoor drive-thru Christmas light display. ‘Nevada Christmas’ is a private home on Chaparral Court, just off Stephanie Way, and puts the holly jollies into the holiday.

A momentous congratulations goes out to the students who voluntarily and competitively placed in the 2017 Carson City School Board Sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest with first place at the high school level going to CHS 9th grade Honors English student Marissa Messmann, second place to CHS 12th grade College Readiness Senior English student Jessica Preston, and third place going to 9th grade Honors English student Matteas Klatt.

Once the turkey has been devoured, all thoughts turn toward shopping. Shop Small Saturday helps to throw a spotlight on our local gems, and the great gifts you’ll find. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. Make time for family and friends at the annual Nutcracker Ballet performed by Pinkerton Ballet at the Carson City Community Center. Keep reading and have a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Pinkerton Ballet Theatre returns Thanksgiving weekend to Carson City for the 29th annual Nutcracker Ballet, featuring Erica Chipp and Oliver-Paul Adams from Smuin Ballet SF and Maykel Solas formerly of Ballet San Jose and Armen Hagopian and Company as well as local dancers.

I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

Sparking a child’s interest in ballet is no easy task, but it’s a challenge that Rosine Bena has met with uncomparable success over the last 20 years.

The turkeys have been cooked, the dishes done, and the largest shopping weekend of the year is off and running. Show some love locally during Shop Small Business Saturday. Great little shops, restaurants, and services offer something unique for those on your gift list. Gift Certificates are never a bad way to go either: who wouldn’t want a massage, a night on the town, or maybe some music lessons? Santa has returned to town and can be found at the Carson Mall or at Billow’s Embroidery. Keep reading and you’ll find some great ways to spend this holiday weekend.

Some of you will be braving the stores today, searching for the Black Friday deals. Some of you will be enjoying time with the family and friends that have come to visit. Show off our great valley with a trip to the State Railroad Museum: the McKeen Motor Car is up and running. Enjoy opening night of Pinkerton Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at the Community Center. Perennial holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” by the Pinkerton Ballet Theatre returns to Carson City Thanksgiving weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 25-27. Featuring Erica Chipp of the Smuin Ballet in San Francisco as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Oliver Adams of Diablo Ballet in Concord, CA as Cavalier, this 28th year of performances is not to be missed.

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

Have you been naughty or nice this year? You’ll have no problem finding Jolly Old St. Nick this weekend. At Debug Computers where, in exchange for a donation to Holiday with a Hero, you can get a photo with the man in red. The Santa Train at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to grab a candy cane, some hot cocoa, and tell him what you’d like to find under the tree. Photographs with Santa are available at the Carson Mall Wednesday through Sunday. Genoa’s annual Breakfast with Santa has three seatings beginning at 8:30 a.m.

SATURDAY:

Sunday is always ideal for relaxing: comfy pajamas, turkey leftovers, and setting up decorations around the house are all good ideas. The football season is in full swing and you’ll find the game on just about everywhere. You have one last chance to catch the Nutcracker this year, so head to the Community Center this afternoon. Grab the whole family for a free concert at the United Methodist Church. Holiday favorites sung by women’s choir ‘Bella Voce’ will get you in the spirit.

SUNDAY:

The long weekend continues, along with great shopping, friends, family, and fun. It’s Small Business Saturday, which is a great time to explore our downtown shops, and the local businesses throughout town. Don’t miss the Christmas Kick-off at Evergreen Gene’s, complete with a visit from Santa. Carson Valley Inn hosts its annual Kandy Kane Holiday Craft Fair. You will also find great Nevada items in our Museum Gift Shops and at the Chamber of Commerce’s Artisan Gallery.
