Submitted by editor on Mon, 11/19/2018 - 8:16pmWhen you drive I-580 in Carson City, you pass a state icon. The old Nevada State Prison in Carson City closed for good in 2012, but plans are in the works to reopen it. Not as a prison, but as a museum.

According to the Nevada Domestic Violence Resource Manual, most victims of domestic violence leave their abusers — often several times. It may take a number of attempts to permanently separate because abusers use violence, financial control, or threats about the children to compel victims to return.
Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Man released from Nevada State Prison sent to Beverly Hills

Larry L. Rease was released from the State Prison and sent to the Carson City Jail for an outstanding Felony Warrant from Airport Court in Beverly Hills, Calif.

President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

Sgt. Mike Cullen, who has spent the past 24 years with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and has served as a sergeant since 2003, also spent 4 years as a correctional officer at Nevada State Prison and was a reserve deputy with CCSO from 92-94.

There’s somewhere to volunteer, somewhere to eat some fundraising pancakes, join in an Asian New Year Lion Dance Parade, Beer Crawl in downtown Carson City, and get your Zumba on. I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Whether it’s the International Film Festival, the Vagina Monologues, or telescope viewing at the WNC Observatory: you can’t tell me there is nothing to do.

Dr. Gedney will also discuss her experiences in caring for inmates over a three decade career. The lecture will be presented February 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Offices, 911 East Musser Street. Karen Gedney, MD, ABAARM is board certified in both internal medicine and anti-aging regenerative medicine.

Carson City makes gains but still searches for a sense of place

That single sentence written by Robert E. Price, author of “The Bakersfield Sound” and award-winning Executive Editor of the newspaper Bakersfield Californian, struck a chord with me, for as we go forth with our “reimagining,” we still don’t have a clear vision/identity of who we were or who we are today.
