Northern Nevada Development Authority: Mineral County Joins Nevada’s Sierra Region

Northern Nevada Development Authority on Friday announced its economic development service area has been expanded to include Mineral County. The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development \has designated NNDA as the regional development authority (RDA) for the county, effective July 1, 2019. Mineral County joins Nevada’s Sierra Region that also includes Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County and Storey County.

Concert Under the Stars venue set to soar Wednesday at Carson City's Eagle Valley Golf Course

A Carson City live music favorite, Concert Under the Stars, is set to soar this Wednesday night. With hours ticking, construction was well underway Tuesday at Eagle Valley Golf Course at Centennial Park, a new venue for the show and its future.

Helping with set up was John Procaccini, who produces the concert for The Greenhouse Project and helped start the blockbuster event with Charlie and Karen Abowd more than a decade ago, with its beginnings in the Cafe at Adele's parking lot.

Carson City Student-Owned-and-Run 'Rehaul' is a showcase in applied entrepreneurial lessons

Jeff Glass has been teaching entrepreneurial classes to the youth of Carson City for years, and now, as his students grow up, they’re branching out to run businesses of their own.

One such student is Paul Klemm, the owner of Carson City’s Rehaul.

“Rehaul started as an effort to develop a student run business,” said Glass.

Zion Belcastro, 16, moved from Oroville, Calif., to live with her aunt in Carson City to be a part of Carson High School’s agriculture program, specifically the Greenhouse Project.

“Where I’m from, it’s cows, sows and plows,” she explained. “Here, it’s more than that. It’s public speaking. It’s leadership. It’s the greenhouse. It’s a lot more than ranching.”

The Carson City Airport Open House is back this Saturday, and they're bringing more than one kind of wing

The Carson City Airport will once again be hosting its Open House and Fly-In this Saturday, June 29 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., with all proceeds going to benefit the Eagle Valley Children’s Home.

Carson City, Reno and Vegas lead statewide Nevada employment growth in May

CARSON CITY — For the eighth consecutive month, Nevada has held the fastest rate of new job growth in the nation, according to May 2019 employment figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Statewide, jobs increased by 4.0 percent, a gain of 55,200 new jobs added since May of last year.

My friend Laura who lives in Southern Oregon is the best vegetable and fruit gardener I know. She makes excellent compost from fresh horse and chicken manures, which she combines with green vegetable, fruit and kitchen waste. She then turns it with her tractor. And, coming from a ranching family who grew their own food, she has an innate sense of how to garden successfully.

It has been a busy and productive year for Carson City Chamber Chairman of the Board Bob Fredlund. He’s a full-time top selling realtor for Coldwell Banker Select in Carson City and a builder of homes at Santa Maria Ranch in Dayton. His construction company also remodels homes, right now most notably the home of Carson City founder Abe Curry.

Carson City Kiwanis moved its weekly meeting to The Martin Hotel. The decision to move was not a difficult one as The Martin Inn has an excellent meeting facility located in the back of its restaurant.

Carson City Kiwanis members are excited about the move as the room is large enough to grow, invite guests, and be able to stay in downtown Carson City. As Carson City Kiwanis celebrates its 60-year anniversary, it looks to continue to be a great service club in this great community.

Go Fund Me account established for Carson City man awaiting kidney transplant

A Carson City couple is in need of financial help to relocate briefly to Utah where they will be awaiting a kidney transplant to happen. Friends and family of the couple have established a Go Fund Me page to help with the expenses.

Gabe Torres of Carson City has irreparable damage to his kidney from Type 1 diabetes. Gabe and his wife, Megan, plan to relocate to Utah for the surgery and are in need of financial help to cover living expenses involved with their stay.

Carson City area students honored as Future Educators at Nevada Governor’s Mansion

CARSON CITY — Thirty-four juniors and seniors from Carson High School were honored at Nevada Governor’s Mansion last Tuesday evening for their efforts in a university level introductory education course. In partnership with the College of Education at the University of Nevada - Reno, CHS offers the EDU 110 course for students interested in pursuing a teaching career.

Senator Square: Carson High School, Empire students share Carson River experience

Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

JoAnne Skelly: The Joy of Botanical Gardens

Gardener’s heaven! That’s what I feel when I visit a botanical garden. Last week we went to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens at Fort Bragg, California. It’s not simply the plants that put me over the top. It’s seeing what is done with the design: how the textures and shapes go together; how the colors are coordinated for complement and contrast.

Senator Square: The weather, clothing and colors are changing at Carson High School

The weather is changing at Carson High School and so are the types of clothing some students are wearing. CHS Dean Sharon Hallinan sent an email out to all CHS teachers about this weather changing challenge. Hallinan told teachers to “please remind students of the Dress Code; highlight the fact that bare midriffs and holey jeans, which violate the ‘Fingertip Rule’, are not allowed.”

CARSON CITY — Carson High School senior sprinter and long jumper Ben Granados signed his letter of intent this morning to run Track and Field for the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota.

He was supported by his father and mother Emiliano and Rhaechul and two sisters Abby and Izzy Granados.
