Fall has arrived in the Sierra Nevada bringing the steady change of turning leaves and a noticeable chill in the air. The fall season also means bears are actively searching for food, even down into the lower valleys.

Volunteer citizen scientists working with the League to Save Lake Tahoe conducted surveys of Donner and Spooner Lakes to detect aquatic invasive species, and restored native wetland habitat in Johnson Meadow in September. UPDATE 605PM: A male suspect was taken into custody Monday evening following a pursuit that led to a stolen vehicle that was apparently used in a series of alleged theft crimes that happened between Carson City and Reno, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said. A pursuit led to a foot chase in the area of Airport and Carmine and a suspect was taken into custody. The stolen vehicle, reported as a white pickup, which had a distinctive lumber rack and tool box, was recovered. A suspect, who was hiding in a trash can, is in custody.

UPDATE 2:12PM: A suspect in theft crimes in Carson City apparently struck at a Home Depot in Reno, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying suspects in two separate incidents involving burglary and grand larceny theft.

Winter sun and drying winds can damage not only our skin, but the bark of trees and shrubs. It seems obvious that plants might get sunburned in the summer, but less intuitive that it also happens in the winter when it is called winter sunscald.

Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association is working with the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space to install a fence at Centennial Park. This fence will help keep the wild horses in the hills and off the golf course, softball fields and out of the businesses and neighborhoods as well.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture has entered into a second non-exclusive cooperative agreement with Wild Horse Connection, a Nevada-based nonprofit, for the management of horses in the Virginia Range, officials announced Tuesday.

The development plan (p. 75) originally called for maintaining the horses access to water, but that provision has since been removed and there is no alternative plans for ensuring the horses' access to water!
