It is the blanket the Earth pulls over herself as she slumbers, hushed and still. It hides the uneven and flawed places of the ground, it ushers in the holiday; we play in it. It is the beginning or the ending of life, depending on the composer.

Everyone in Carson City is invited, always invited, to come on out and support the CHS athletic teams and programs, especially when so many of these individuals and teams have been so successful. Carson City students are recognizing and honoring military men and women this week with Veteran’s Day displays and events. Veterans from all branches of military service, as well as families of students, have been encouraged to attend events Thursday, Friday and Tuesday. Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

In an era where students are more comfortable communicating behind a screen rather than face-to-face, teaching Physical Education can be more than challenging at times. It seems that each year there are fewer students who enjoy physical activity. This year has been no different.

Pinwheels for Prevention cover Carson City Legislature, raising awareness to prevent child abuse

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Carson City has gone blue with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a national event hosted by Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada.

On Friday, Carson City residents joined together to plant pinwheels across the Nevada Legislature's lawn, in an effort to raise awareness about preventing child abuse.

“The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve,” a spokesperson for the national event said. “We want to reinforce the notion that healthy child development serves as a foundation for both community and economic development.”

Carson City School Board meeting to discuss competitions, early release days

The Carson City School Board will host its next meeting on March 12 at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Topics to discuss will include the Superintendent’s Report, which will go over the NJROTC Orienteering Team and the report from the national competition. In addition, the Carson City High School Cheer Team and the recognition of third place winner at the USA Spirit Nationals Competition will be discussed.

February School Board Meeting to discuss climate change, extracurriculars

The Carson City School District February meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26 in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, beginning at 7 p.m.

One item on the table for discussion is the adoption of “Schools for Climate Change,” described as a non-partisan, grassroots, youth-adult campaign with a mission to empower schools to speak up for climate change in order to protect current and future generations.
