Carson City roommates fight over computer repair time, one jailed for battery

A 63-year-old Carson City man was arrested Dec. 22 after allegedly pushing and punching his roommate, a senior citizen, to the ground in an argument over a computer issue.
The victim, said to be at least 65 years of age, went to the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 5:53 p.m. to report the battery. He told authorities that his roommate broke his cell phone in half when he attempted to call police for help.

Arrested was Stephen Roberts who faces a felony charge of preventing a witness from calling for help and a gross misdemeanor battery charge in which the victim was 65 years or over.

He is being held in the Carson City Jail on $10,500 bail.

According to the arrest report the victim said he was on the phone helping a Gardnerville woman with a computer issue and that roommate Roberts began yelling at him to get off the phone so that he could work on his computer instead of the computer belonging to the woman on the other line, the victim told police.

The victim said an argument escalated and his roommate of about a month and friend of several years, pushed him to the point where he fell backward against a wall and then dropped to the floor. The victim told police he attempted to use his cell phone to call for help, but his roommate smashed the phone in half.

The victim said he punched his roommate because he felt his life was in danger, according to the arrest report. The victim said he may have been punched in the fight but doesn't remember. He did have an injury to his face, the arrest report states.

Police made contact with the woman who was on the other line speaking with the victim and she confirmed she heard yelling in the background before the phone between her and the victim was disconnected.

Deputies then made phone contact with Roberts who said the victim attacked him "like a tiger" and he had a swollen and bruised jaw, the arrest report states. Roberts said he was having car problems and declined to come to the Sheriff's Office front counter to talk.

Officers then went to the residence in the 1200 block of East Fifth and made contact with the man, who appeared intoxicated, according to the arrest report. Officers asked Roberts what happened between him and the victim. He said there was no incident and that police had the wrong person. The arresting officer advised Roberts that he had earlier told him over the phone that his roommate attacked him. At that point, Roberts said the victim flipped out on him without warning and attacked him, the report states.

However, a woman who was hiding in the room of a third roommate while officers were interviewing the suspect said she saw Roberts punch her roommate in the face and then later told her not to tell anyone about it, the arrest report states.

He was arrested and jailed on the two charges.

A 27-year-old Carson City man, Tyler Michael Klein, was jailed and faces two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and six misdemeanor drug charges after being arrested Dec. 22, 7:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Stewart Street. His 19-year-old brother faces a gross misdemeanor charge of destroying or concealing evidence.

According to the arrest report, officers responded at 6:50 p.m. to the 600 block of North Stewart Street on a domestic violence dispute.

According to the police report, a father and brother of an 18-year-old woman staying at the motel had arrived to ask her to leave with them. The family members told authorities the woman was a heroin addict and wanted her to come home with them. The father and son were invited into the room by Tyler Klein and his brother, Tyler being the woman's boyfriend, the arrest report states.

The father and son began talking to the woman who stated she was no longer using drugs. The father asked to check the room. The brothers in the room agreed to allow them to look and that's when the father found several hypodermic devices, according to the arrest report. The father told his daughter she needed to leave with him and go to rehab or else he was going to call the Sheriff's Office, according to the police report.

The brother of the 18-year-old woman saw Tyler Klein put all of the drug paraphernalia into a black back pack with a '49er logo on it. The daughter refused to leave and the father called the Sheriff's Office.

The brother of the woman saw Tyler Klein throw the bag over the balcony to the suspect's brother and mother who were waiting outside. The pair then took the pack and ran to a truck parked nearby. Then the back pack was moved to a green trash can in the parking lot. When the brother of the 18-year-old girl turned around he saw his father getting punched in the face by the stepfather of the suspect.

Both the father and son of the 18-year-old woman said they did not wish to file battery charges against the stepfather of the two brothers. Officers then spoke with the mother of the suspect who was uncooperative and denied seeing any bag and stated she did not know what the officers were talking about. Moments later a deputy pulled a black back pack with a '49ers logo on it out of the trash can, the arrest report states.

The bag was filled with hypodermic devices, small plastic baggies, knives and what appeared to be cell phone cords. Officers also saw a pawn slip for an iPod with the name Tyler Klein on it, the police report states. The brother of the suspect was placed into handcuffs and read his rights. He added he did not put the bag in the trash can and he never touched the bag and demanded to know what he was being charged with. The officer told him he was being charged with destroying or concealing evidence, a gross misdemeanor, the report states.

Officers then spoke with the 18-year-old woman who appeared to be on drugs. The woman told officers she saw the brother of the suspect throw the back pack in the trash can and she was now going to go with her father and brother so that she could get some help getting clean, the arrest report states.

Tyler Klein was taken to jail without incident. While book the items in the back pack into evidence, officers found a clear baggy with a small red balloon inside. The ballon was to be submitted for a heroin test; also found was a red metal container with a screw off top and inside was a small clear baggy with a small amount of what appeard to be heroin and was confirmed with a test, the report states.

Also found was a clear baggy with a small amount of marijuana; also found was a small plastic baggy with green dollar signs on it. The baggy had a white powdery residue inside it, which tested positive for methamphetamine. Officers found several other items of drug paraphernalia in the backpack including 21 hypodermic devices, the arrest report states.

According to the arrest report, officers spoke with the man who told them that the couple had bought the car recently, they did not have the title to the car and that there was no proof of insurance but advised that the registration was good through next year.

The officer asked if the address on his license was correct and the man said that it wasn't and that he had just moved. A wants and warrants dispatch was made and it was learned the man had a felony warrant for his arrest in Washington State and that the man is a registered felon, the report states.

He was cuffed and placed into a patrol car. His rights were read to him and he was asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle and he said no there wasn't. He was asked if a K9 could search the vehicle and he said: "You'll have to ask my wife," the arrest report states. Then he added: "Yeah, there is nothing bad in there."

The woman gave authorities consent to search the vehicle and there was a positive K9 alert on the driver's seat, passenger seat and center console. Officers located a small amount of marijuana in the driver's visor that was wrapped in brown paper bag and in a cigar wrapper.

Officers saw a purse and asked the woman if it was hers and she said it was. Officers searched the purse and located a bottle of several different types of pills in a ziplock bag. The bottle did not have a name on it but the bottle did have a name of a drug on it, "Alprazolam."
