Rain and snow expected to last into next week
Expect several days of rain in Carson City and snow in the Sierra through at least Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and Carsonweather.com.
Low pressure in the northeast Pacific will direct the jet stream and bring abundant moisture into the Sierra and Western Nevada region including Carson City. The pattern is forecast to remain through the week and possibly into next week and is a favorable set-up for heavy precipitation and strong winds across the region, according to a weather service statement.
After some clearing on Wednesday and Thursday, the first big wave should push into the area Friday, with additional waves of heavy precipitation possible Saturday through Tuesday. Snow levels are uncertain at this time and could vary from 4,500 to 6,500 feet in the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas, 6,000 to 8,000 feet in Mono County and 4,000 to 6,000 feet for areas north of interstate 80.
The exact location of the heaviest precipitation is also uncertain at this time, the weather service says, but there is good potential for significant snow fall in the Sierra this weekend. For Monday and Tuesday models are suggesting snow levels may rise as much as 1,000 feet depending on the location of the jet and cold upper low in the northeast Pacific. Those with travel plans in the Sierra this weekend and early next week should be prepared for winter driving conditions over the passes and travel delays.
