What Works: The Power of Focus
I used to pride myself on being a generalist. Being a Jane of all trades was a darn good survival mechanism when I was trying to make ends meet. I could do a little writing here. A little consulting here. And, believe me, I would consult on anything. I found comfort in this kitchen sink approach to life.
But soon, I found my sink was full. And the dishes were starting to smell. By trying to do it all, I was cluttering up my life and business. I did this to the extent that I had many conflicting priorities. I wanted to do it all. I just couldn’t. That’s when I gave up my generalist ways and found focus.
F: Figure out what matters to you. Your focus matters. It’s what makes your heart beat just a little faster. It puts a smile on your face. Focus on what you love and you will never work a day in your life.
O: Outline how you express what matters to you. Now that you know what you love, outline how you currently express it. If it’s still in the dream stage, outline the dream. Do this in an inverted triangle format. If you need help, I coach private sessions on this topic.
C: Create a top-line plan. This is where you get a bit more specific. Leave some wiggle room. Life doesn’t always go as expected and contingency plans unfold. There is no one “right” way to do this. The point is to start doing it.
U: Understand you may get distracted. Promise yourself, like an enthusiastic puppy, you will train yourself to sit with your focus. Things which do not match your focus will pop up. You will need to decide if it’s a distraction or worth modifying your vision.
S: State your intention. To make sure all your activities point back to your focus, state it. Your focus statement should be short (10 words or less) and easy to repeat.
What is my focus? I teach what I know and have fun.
It’s that simple for me. For example, did you know I don’t charge to speak at gatherings? Although I do charge for group workshops, speaking engagements like Women’s Conference were done on an agreement that had no monetary exchange. Organizations might pay for food, travel expenses, or the like. But that’s all. This is part of the “teach what I know” portion of my focus. It’s also a lot of fun!
This week’s challenge: Find your focus! Follow the formula below. Post your short focus statement in the comments below. If you need help with the process, I am here.
