Flood watch issued for Carson City and surrounding areas as storm pushes through
Carson City and areas west of Highway 395 from Lassen County, to Reno, Lake Tahoe and into northern Mono County are under a Flood Watch.
Heavy rain associated with a series of storms will increase soil moisture loads in the surrounding areas, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Periods of heavy rain with high snow levels Saturday afternoon through Sunday could pose flooding issues for small creeks and streams, according to the weather service. Mud and rock slides are possible in areas of steep terrain and near-recent wildfire burn areas.
Snow levels will rise above 8,000 feet Saturday afternoon and may rise to near 10,000 feet Saturday night and early Sunday before a cold front passes through the Sierra and Western Nevada Sunday. Snow levels will fall to 6,000 to 7,000 feet behind the front and quickly end the flood threat along small creeks and streams.
