Pair sentenced to prison maximum time in Memorial Day weekend robbery of elderly WWII vet
Robert "Robbie" Hernandez, 28, and Jordan Burkhart, 24, were each sentenced Tuesday in Carson City District Court to six years to 15 years each for robbery against a person over the age of 60, and an additional six years to 20 years for perpetrating the crimes on a person older than 60 years of age. The sentences are consecutive.
The two men robbed 101-year-old James Sorrentino, who died this fall, and his in-residence female caretaker in a Canvasback Drive home. Before he died he wrote a victim impact statement that was heard during sentencing. See the statement below.
“This is a man, who is a true gentlemen, a true veteran, who’s last act was protecting another person. Isn’t that what a veteran does? They protect someone else at the sake of their own life. It was admirable. His actions were to protect someone else. That is truly a noble person. His letter embodies what he is and shows who he was,” said Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger who prosecuted the case. "It was a good resolution and brought justice to these victims, especially to Mr. Sorrentino a veteran and a gentlemen. It was the noblest of acts of valor."
Both men pled guilty to forcing their way into Sorrentino's home on May 25, holding him and the caretaker at gunpoint, each saying they were looking for a safe which never existed. They attacked the man and caretaker and then ransacked the house, getting away with a watch, ring and wallet with around $30.
