Carson City's October jobless rate increases to 9.6 percent
While state jobless figures went down for the month, the October unemployment figures in Carson City increased to 9.6 percent, up from from September’s 9.4 percent.
"Carson City's economy still struggles and has lost 700 jobs or -2.5 percent relative to one year ago," according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Labor overview.
The good news is that in September, Carson City did add 200 new jobs, according to the department in a news release earlier this week.
Statewide, the unemployment rate nudged down to 9.3 percent in October; however, the labor market added 7,400 jobs unlike September’s loss of 8,800. September’s unemployment rate was revised up to 9.4 percent from the previously reported 9.3 percent.
“While Nevada continues to experience monthly volatility, overall the Silver State is headed in the right direction,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “To continue the momentum of economic recovery, we must cultivate diverse industry opportunities and support jobseekers in skills training.”
Las Vegas saw an increase of 4,800 jobs for the month, while Reno gained 1,600 jobs, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Relative to last year, employment in the Las Vegas valley has increased by 17,500, a 2.1 percent growth rate.
Unemployment rates in each of the state’s three population centers stand at their lowest October readings since 2008. Reno has the lowest rate, at 8.8 percent for September and October. Las Vegas’ rate registered at 9.4 percent for both September and October, while in Carson City’s, rate increased from September’s 9.4 percent to 9.6 percent in October.
Heading into the holiday season, Anderson said Nevada is expected to fare well.
“Our expectation is to match or exceed 2012’s holiday-related seasonal gains,” Anderson said. “While we are still below pre-recessionary levels, this is good news for those who depend on holiday hiring for an opportunity to return to work or to supplement their income.”
Last year, seasonal employment rose by 10,400 jobs from September to December.
