‘The Nutcracker’ returns to Carson City for three performances
Perennial holiday favorite “The Nutcracker” will be presented in Carson City by the Pinkerton Ballet Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 23-25.
The Nutcracker Ballet is based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. It is the story of a young German girl, Clara, who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads. Scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the ballet features one of the holiday season’s most famous pieces of classical music.
The Nutcracker takes place in Western Europe in the 1800′s. The story opens on Christmas Eve at the home of Hans Stahlbaum, the town mayor. The wealthy Stahlbaum family is hosting a festive holiday party for family and friends. The Stahlbaum children, Clara and Fritz, are anxiously awaiting the arrival of several invited guests. The home is immaculately decorated for the holidays, complete with a beautifully trimmed Christmas tree.
Arriving late to the party is the Stahlbaum children’s mysterious godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. He delights the party guests with his life-size dancing dolls. He then presents gifts to all the children. Fritz receives a toy train and Clara is presented with a beautiful toy nutcracker. Clara is delighted with the unusual present until Fritz breaks it. Drosselmeyer wipes Clara’s tears and repairs the nutcracker, but she remains disappointed. The guests eventually depart and Clara and Fritz are sent to bed. Clara gets back up to search for her nutcracker, then falls asleep clutching it. And that’s when her dream begins.
The Pinkerton Ballet Theatre is a non-profit dance company that encourages dance among youth that have not had exposure to dance instruction and strive to bring the art of dance to the rural areas of Nevada. All tickets are reserved seating and non-refundable. The performances are at the Bob Boldrick Theater and Carson City Community Center. Tickets are available now. Performances are at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
