ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing is great near Prattville. Fish 20 ft - 42 ft down, there are large concentrations of fish there. Due to cooler surface temperatures fish are starting to move back to shallower waters. Techniques that work varies from day to day so be prepared to switch it up. If the dodger isn’t working try a naked crawler.
Almanor Fishing Adventures.

BIG SPRINGS RESERVOIR, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:

The marina launch ramp is closed (low water) but the store and RV Park will stay open until the finish.
Fish are moving deeper as the cooler temps push them towards the dam.
Streamer fishing perch fry and leech patterns along the east shoreline 4-6 feet during low light can be productive.
Water is off color and stained but the algae and weed issues are long gone.
I hear the sheep & head Ram are heading towards the coast for the winter soon, stop by and get some flies from Jefff- errr-eee!

CATNIP RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Marina is closed Fishing is slow due to the extremely low water level.
Dark streamers on full sink lines is the best bet.
Fishing ends Nov. 15.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
The lake is at the lowest point we have seen in over 20 years.
Watch out for islands between the marina and McGee Bay.
It is also 3 ft deep 100 yds out from Sandy Point.
Water temps are between 52 and 56 in most of the lake.
Find the warmest water and you will find fish.
Algae is pretty much history and it is very clear in many areas.
Cold mornings now so no need to show up before 9 am and bite really gets going about 10.
Fishing Conditions:
Marina is now closed for the season, access via north arm for float tubes and shore fishing through 11/15.
Fair. Daphnia is almost gone but persistent in many places holding bigger fish. Hilton, McGee and Crooked are pretty much done for with a few small fish on the west side of McGee.
Fish are now holding in north end, Six Bays and Leighton.
Bad news is the big fish are spread out so you have to wait between smaller fish to have one come by.
Sandy- mostly small, Six Bays - mostly big but fewer grabs and off and on from day to day.
Leighton - small to medium in shallows like 5 ft and mix of sizes with some big ones out in 10-12ft.
Fishing from the shore in late afternoon in Six Bays and along Green Banks has also been good.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
It has been a pretty good year overall on Crowley.
The DFG dumped a bunch of little’s in this fall so we are anticipating a solid season (water level permitting) again next year as well.
The low water level & late algae bloom took its toll later on for still water nymph fishers; however the excellent streamer bite made up for the slow times fishing with an Under-Cator. The water level has come up a foot since its low point with the most consistent fishing being in the north arm around Six Bays and Layton Springs.
The algae has finally become less of a nuisance throughout the lake and a hike down to the Hiltons could be a good choice for the grand finale here.
The conditions allow some good opportunities to fish from shore around Six Bays due to the steep drop-off .
Tubers are also targeting this ledge, and during lower light periods the fish are more concentrated along the shoreline. Go deeper as the sun climbs.
Perch fry and leech patterns are best # 8-10. Go rogue and use a # 2-6 rainbow trout imitation for a shot at “Brownzilla” The big browns are targeting the small rainbows & cutty’s recently planted.
I have witnessed some awesome displays of white water chaos as a monster brown chases its prey.
The weather remains nice enough for a small chironomid hatch, and the larva are present year around. With the cleaner water one can have consistent fishing in 6-10 feet during the late mornings while indicator fishing. Hard to beat a tiger or zebra midge as the lower, use a perch fry, bird’s nest, or crystal leech as the upper.
The marina is now closed until next season.

DAVIS LAKE AND FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Blood midges are hatching and the shallow water fishing in both lakes is pretty good. Cooler water has improved these fisheries in the last week.
Wading or float tubing with a floating or intermediate line is the best bet in mornings and early afternoon.
If the wind comes up, switch to a sinking line and fish the edges of weed beds and drop offs.
Good patterns to try are sheep creek specials, water boatmen, leeches and buggers, blood midge pupa and callibaetis nymphs. If you like to fish indicators, this is a great time of year to use that method.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
For boaters trolling has been good with copper/red head Wee Dick Nites and red-dot frog Needlefish. Best results at 5 ft deep around the island.
Fly fishing has improved for float tubers using intermediate sinkers in the Fairview, Mosquito Slough, and Freeman Creek areas.
Try fishing near Mallard Point and Eagle Point for shore fishing.
Just watch out for those weeds around Eagle’s Point.
— Western Outdoor News

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been good. The cloudy and wet conditions make for dense hatches, mostly in late afternoon and evening.
Best reports are coming out of the Island Road area.
There are plenty of Rainbows which is allowing all anglers to dry fly fish in the morning, nymph under indicators, or strip during the afternoon. Fish the swing with fast sinking Poly Leaders.
To start off any day swing #16 Pheasant Tail nymphs trailing # 18-20 black Zebra Midges or WD-40’s.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Feather River- Salmon anglers are reporting that salmon fishing has slowed.
Steelhead fishing has been very good!
They have been found eating nymphs, eggs patterns, plugs and roe.
— Fish with JD

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
The fishing at Frenchman Lake continues to be good.
Even though there are fewer fishermen now, we have heard that the size of the trout being caught is still in the 14" to 18" range.
One bank fisherman reported that he limited out using a white colored bait and the fish were nice sized rainbows.
Boat fishermen are still coming out to Frenchman even though the docks are gone. Trolling has been good using nightcrawlers.
Fish are closer to the surface now.
Don’t forget - the streams will close on November 15th, but the lake remains open for year-round fishing.
Come out and enjoy the fall colors and be sure to stop in at Wiggin’s for all of your needs.

FT. CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS, LYON COUNTY, NEV:
Closed until the second Saturday in February, 2013.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500)
(www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing is still good! Cloudy wet weather should produce better hatches ever evening before sunset. The Powerhouse # 2 riffle is a good fishing spot. Anglers are reporting hook-ups using, # 18 - # 20 black or brown midges or mayfly patterns.
The 2012 season on Hat Creek closes November 15th.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Closed until May 01, 2013.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is at 6 CFS. CDC caddis or e/c caddis on the surface. Some mid-day baetis activity. Nymph fishing remains the most productive. WD-40's, flashback pheasant tails, hares ears and sparkle caddis pupa.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
The snowfall we had in late October really helped bump up the flows here a couple notches making the conditions better.
Get your mayfly adults out # 16-22.
There are a few late hoppers present, good choice if you do not like fishing the tiny mayflies but enjoy surface action. Late mornings through 2pm. SJ worms and egg patterns are a nice change and can fool some of the PHD trout here this time of year.
Stick to small PT’s, birds nest, crystal midge & caddis larva nymph’s.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions: Good
Flows at 26 CFS as of 10/31.
Flows above should have been about 10 CFS higher all summer.
Fishing Conditions: Good. Same ol same ol. Fishing midges early, then switching to baetis and caddis later after it warms up a bit.
Frost on the ground in the mornings, so bundle up if you're going out at the crack of dawn.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Grant Lake - Gull Lake - June Lake - Silver Lake - Rush Creek
Try Silver Lake with black or purple woolly buggers on sink tip or full sink lines. Try Rush Creek with a Royal Wullf, Royal Coachman or a stimulator. Nymph fish with P.T.'s, San Juan worms and olive hares ears.
The flow in Rush Creek is 47 CFS.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been good this week! Expect bigger steelhead and an occasional King Salmon too. Best access to water is by boat.
Clown-eggs and micro spawns in yellow and pink seem to be the best flies to use; while Shrimp pink eggs have been getting the Steelhead.

Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

KNOTT CREEK RESERVOIR, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
Closes November 15.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The Lewiston has been fishing well and water conditions have been perfect.
The best times to go have been all throughout the day!
Good techniques to try is suspending # 22 red zebra midges or Gidgets under a treated piece of poly yarn.
Best fishing has been reported by anglers using boats.
Don’t forget about fishing in the coves!

Recent stockings have improved the fishing here.
No more bait fishing from the monument to the lake.
Section from the bridge to the monument is now closed

Fishing small Caddis dries with a small dropper.
Lower Owens River:
Water conditions: Fair. Flows down to 199 CFS as of 10/31.
Fishing conditions:
Well, the moment we've all been waiting for has arrived. Flows are now below 200 CFS and are prime for wading. Hearing there is a good Trico hatch early, followed by a sizable spinner fall.
Fish drowned Tricos and then switch to baetis around 11.
After that, hearing there are some sporadic fall caddis going off as well.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Lower Owens River:
Near perfect conditions here right now. Fall is my favorite time to drift the LO with great fishing, beautiful weather, and gorgeous scenery.
The wild trout section has been fishing great with nymphing and dry fly fishing consistently getting those wading this area grabs.
Use PT’s and bird’s nest # 16-20, broken back zebras or tigers # 16-18.
Adult PMD’s, Trico’s and BWO’s will get looks # 14-22.
The only Debbie Downer this time of year can be a “willow leaf hatch” that may emerge when the wind blows the dead leaves into the water. The bombardment of all the debris can put the Kibosh on a good bite. Keep this in mind if there is wind in the forecast, we have another couple weeks of this until the brambles have shed their foliage.
The “dip & strip” streamer CATCHING from our drift boats has been really good most floats-we had a day or two of so-so fishing due to a small flow increase from 150-200cfs.
Punk Perch, seal buggers, & Loebergs used with a moderate to heavy sinking tip line are good choices.
Upper Owens River:
The current release rate of 160 CFS is making some sections difficult to fish. Figure about half the normal runs are currently fishable.
Water clarity is very good with a strong showing of BWO’s, midges, & small caddis being the catalyst for some excellent dry fly action during the calm mid-day periods.
You may need to use a couple AB shot to get twin bead heads down near the bottom, even in the slower pools.
Numbers have been very good here; however the majority of the fish are small rainbows and browns running about 8 inches on average, although most of us men would say they are nearly a foot!
There are big fish on the move and holding in the deeper pools, they are just a bitch to get down to under these flows in some runs.
We are about a month late this year due to the warm weather and very low lake level at Crowley which made it nearly impossible for the larger fish to migrate up for such a long distance in short water.
Flashback PT’s & Assassin birds nest # 14-18, SJ worms and egg patterns, broken back tigers, olive crystal caddis #18-20 for nymphs.
Streamer tugging has also been tough due to the high flows. The water is above the banks in some sections and trying to keep the fly down and near the undercuts is not possible for the majority of runs that are traditionally good this time of year.
I used a dry/dry combo rig recently and crushed the fish on the surface with a # 16 high vis para BWO & a # 22 para Trico as the target fly. Flat out deadly! Look for “pods” of feeding fish and apply the three “P’s” Position, Presentation, Performance.
Good stuff here right now, wait until the flows back off for the bigs to become consistent.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing is good! There has been a good October Caddis this year which is drawing Rainbows to the edges of the river where they can look for the emerging adults. Fishing is consistent all day and there are always a few fish feeding at the surface near sunset.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
The level of the lake is the key to good fishing in the transition area near the inlet. It is just about right currently (4384′) but has been fluctuating so much is hard to predict. 4385′ or above this area is difficult to wade or access.
The short river section is fishing well using dry/dropper bead head combos.
Mayfly adults with midge, caddis, bird’s nest, or PT patterns as your dropper will all get grabs. Fishing the pocket water in the heavy brush can be really fun and productive so long as power generation is not occurring.
Tubing has also been very good near the launch ramp (they plant here) and around the inlet.
The brown trout fishing is best here in fall and early winter.
Loebergs, Spruce-A-Bu’s and punk perch are good choices for streamers using a full sinking or heavy sinking tip line and trolling along the drop-offs.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Reports have varied from Pyramid in the last week. Shore anglers are having some success but it is not consistent. One day will be good and the next, completely different.
Tui Chub minnows are the key. Find a beach with minnows and the cutthroats will be around.
Last week’s storms helped bring the water temps down to better levels and the fishing should improve if the weather stays cool.
Float tubes and pontoon boats will help you get to a little deeper water on calm, clear days.
Fishing with sinking lines woolly worms, minnow patterns and beetles is the best method right now.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
George and Carla Molino of Cutthroat Charters (775-476-0555) (www.fishpyramid.com) reports:
Fishing has been good, we are catching fish, but the numbers were better the first couple of weeks of the seasons.
The water temperature is in the mid-50's and the fish are scattered.
There was a 10-pounder caught over the weekend.
We do our fishing by trolling on the west side of the lake.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Some of the best fishing in years!
Fishing has been great and is expected to remain so.
Salmon season is open below Deschutes Rd, which brings a lot of boating traffic. Fish deep, with your leader’s length between 7.5- 8.5’ to the split shot. Egg patterns in orange and salmon-egg and # 18 Pheasant Tail Nymph are good choices on the Lower Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
October Caddis hatches are good but expect to taper off this week. Fly fishing has been good on the entire Upper Sacramento River.
Cool, wet conditions will produce decent but isolated hatches of BWOs.
Techniques for rainbows are to fish deep, in the rocks.
High- Stick and low line angling seem to be affective on the Lower Sac.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF:
J.D. Richey of www.fishingwithjd.com (916-388-1956) reports:
KING FISHING STILL GOING DOWN LOW
The Sac has been pumping out decent scores of kings lately down in the Sacramento Metro area and down to Vierra’s near Isleton.
These late running kings are hitting spinners and Flatfish.
Upstream, the bite has been slow in the Ord Bend/Hamilton City/Woodson Bridge area as they are currently in-between the Fall and Late Fall runs.
Look for some chrome dandies to show up there in November!

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
King Salmon:
As of November 2, 2012. Water flows are at 6,500 CFS.
Sacramento River Salmon fishing is good. We got some much needed rain this week, this will bring up more salmon to the area.
The boats have been bringing in 4 to 6 salmon a day now. Quite a few of the fish have been 25 pounds plus, also another 41 pounder.
Larger salmon will continue to be produced as we move in November, and December. This is prime time fishing! More big salmon to come.
November and December are known months on the Sacramento River to produce big salmon.
The Anderson area is excellent for trout as well as salmon.
This is prime time fishing!
Bouncing roe and back trolling FLATFISH LURES.
Lures have been producing the largest King Salmon.

Lake Shasta fishing is awesome. Yes , November fishing is proving to be very successful, catching Rainbow trout and King Salmon.
We are catching mostly Rainbow Trout on the surface and also about 40 feet deep. The Dry Creek area, using Cripp Lures and Wiggle Hoochies.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing is fair to good for Rainbows and Kings.
Rainbows are being caught from the surface to 40 ft deep. The Bridge Bay area has also been producing good size Rainbows as well as the Dry Creek area. Cripp Lures and Wiggle Hoochies have been doing the trick.

TOPAZ LAKE:
Closed until January 01, 2013.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Trinity River conditions are low and clear. It has been fishing good for some, slow for others. About a million Salmon smolts were released on the 5th. Steelhead have made an appearance and expected to be great through February. Try fishing faster shallow water to avoid those tiny fish from beating the other to the bite.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
Currently, Water is at 300 CFS.
Steelhead Fishing is fantastic! For Steelhead fishing, we are focusing on late October and November, water flows low and great time for fishing for steelhead with the fly rod on the Trinity River.
Picking up trout and steelhead daily. 12 to 16 fish days, fly fishing is best bet now. Fishing Douglas City area is producing beautiful Steelhead.
Trinity River fishing is conveniently located 40 minutes West of Redding, CA fishing from the town of Weaverville, California.

TRUCKEE RIVER:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
California side –
The brown trout are spawning and fishing remains pretty good. Snow last week made some access difficult for a few days but that has melted off for the most part now.
The river is clear, cool and running at good flows (229 CFS in Truckee and 407 CFS at Farad).
Some BWO hatches but the nymphs of these mayflies are a better bet on the river. Golden stones are a good choice as always, as well as egg patterns or an October Caddis pupa.
Nevada Side –
The BWO hatches have started after the last series of storms. Bugs start hatching about 11am. While you will see some rising fish occasionally, especially on cloudy days, the best way to fish most of this hatch is with a nymph or emerger.
Baby crawfish, golden stones, streamers and egg patterns also will produce some fish.
Brown trout are spawning here as well so PLEASE STAY OFF OF THE REDS and let the browns do their thing!!
The river is flowing at 346 CFS in Reno currently.

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
Flows are down to 47 CFS and the brown trout are spawning here as well.
Kokanee remain in the system but are pretty much at the end of their spawn.
Yellowish olive fall stones, BWO, midges, eggs and small san juan worms are all productive patterns this time of year.
The fish are spooky so take your time approaching them.
Long light leaders will improve your success. PLEASE STAY OFF OF THE REDS and let the brown trout spawn in peace!

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lake since 2009. Mineral County Road Dept. has done some work on the State Parks Launch. Launching is improved but you still need four wheel drive.

WALKER RIVERS, NEV:
The Truckee River Outfitters (775-853-7368) (info@renoflyshop.com):
East Walker River:
The fishing here remains very good.
Fall may be the best time to fish the East Walker. Flows are at a healthy 67 CFS but most probably will drop from there in the next few weeks.
BWOs and midges make up the bulk of the bug activity.
Nymphs, emergers and pupa fished under dry flies are probably the best bet.
Bead head flies will get you down to the fish without additional weight in most cases. Streamers are fun to fish this time of year and will bring fish out of the holes and undercuts to case your fly.
The hard part is getting them to eat it!

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Fly Fishing Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Flows have dropped to 23 CFS. There is very limited water that can sustain healthy fish at this release, I like 50 CFS and up as a reference for those of you unfamiliar with the EW.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Water flow has been up and down and is now 23 CFS. Fishing is tough. WD-40's, buckskin nymphs, copper John's and Prince Nymphs.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Water Conditions
Poor. Flows down to 23 CFS as of 10/31.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Flows now down into the 20's.
Fish are going to be stacked in the deepest water they can find at this point.
Mostly small midges and mayflies after it starts to warm up.

WASHOE LAKE, WAHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
Washoe Lake dried up in 2004 and, although it is presently full and has been restocked, the fish population, consisting mostly of channel catfish and white bass, is small. Fishing is expected to be poor.
