Carson City to celebrate 'Day of the Dead' at Nevada State Museum
All cultures celebrate the dead as well as mourn them. And the first of November usually marks the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos. In Carson City there will be a multicultural celebration Saturday, November 10, to honor loved ones who have passed away with stories, crafts, songs and exhibits, colorful folklore dancers. The Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum.
Crafts include creation of sugar skulls that honor the deceased loved ones. Ofrendas are displays by families that include memorabilia from the departed person, with samples of favorite foods, symbols, and remembrances of things people loved. Pan de Muerto is a traditional bread associated with the celebration.
Jesse Ortiz, representing Danza Azteka Quetzalcoatl, will present two 45-minute Aztec dance performances beginning at 1 and 3 pm at the Nevada State Museum during our Day of the Dead celebration.
Jesse also goes by the name Ocelotl, a Nahuatl word translated as Jaguar Warrior. The performances by Danza Azteka Quetzalcoatl will help audiences better understand the meaning behind Day of the Dead and share aspects of Latino cultural heritage through dance. The Sacramento dance group features about a dozen dancers, ranging from age four through adult. They dance year round in California and Nevada, but are especially active in early November, the time that Day of the Dead is celebrated traditionally in Mexico.
Other activities include stories, songs, discussion, exhibits (ofrendas) that honor deceased loved ones, and a wide variety of crafts, including sugar skulls, fancy cut paper designs, paper flowers, and folkloric figurines. Pan de muerto, a traditional bread is displayed at the event and a few are given as prizes during the 11 am discussion.
Day of the Dead sponsors include the Nevada Appeal, Radio Lazer, United Latino Community, Latino Parent Association, Carson City Library, Aztec Bakery, Miriam Silis, Galvan Family, Yolanda Garcia, Bordewich-Bray Elementary, Metzonali, Miriam Torres, WNC Latino Club, Claudia Aguilar, Hair Studio and Spear Me, Mary Crawley, Video Centro, and Friends of the Nevada State Museum.
