Large bear captured near Mountain Street
UPDATE: Nevada Department of Wildlife personnel captured a large male black bear Wednesday morning behind the Reinhold Sadler House on Mountain Street, a couple of blocks from the Governor's Mansion.
The bear was hit with one tranquilizer dart and then climbed a tree, where it stayed for 30-40 minutes, until it was driven down with pepper spray and hit with a second dart, in front of several onlookers.
According to Carl Lackey, NDOW's resident bear expert, this animal appears to be larger than the 350 pound bear they captured Tuesday in Carson City. The male bear is believed to be between 5 and 6 years old. He had not been tagged. He was given the tag number 82 after being caught, which was attached to his ear.
This most recent capture comes at a time when bears are very active in the region as they prepare for winter. Bears are still in the physiological state of hyperphagia where their in-take of food can increase from 3,000 calories a day to as many as 25,000 calories per day.
The bear that was caught in Carson City on Tuesday was set to be released Wednesday morning but NDOW were called at around 8 a.m. by the Carson City Sheriff's Office which was tracking the bear from yard to yard.
Neither of the bears had been handled before by NDOW and both were subjected to aversion conditioning treatment (which consists of rubber buck shot fired at the bears and the use of Karelian bear dogs chasing and usually treeing the bears). “We give the bears a bad experience in the hope that they do not come back,” added Lackey. “We’ve been successful using this technique.”
As of Thursday morning, there were still reports from residents on the west side of Carson City of bear activity in that area.
