Safety seminar featured Sept. 27 as part of National Bullying Prevention Month
Carson ATA Karate for Kids is providing a free community Bullying Prevention and Stranger Safety seminar on Saturday, Sept. 27 to kick off National Bullying Prevention Month in October.
The event, starting at 11 a.m., begins with the reading of a proclamation by Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski, proclaiming October as Carson City Bullying Prevention Month, followed by Sheriff Ken Furlong talking about bullying and stranger safety from a law enforcement perspective.
Attendees will also participate in hands-on bullying prevention techniques that demonstrate this year’s national bullying prevention theme, “The End of Bullying Begins with Me,” set by the Parent Action Coalition for Educational Rights (PACER) National Bullying Prevention Center, and will learn how to defend themselves and others from bullies, as well as protect themselves from strangers that mean them harm.
“Bullying changes every decision a kid makes,” said Shawn Goodner, Third Degree Black Belt and Owner and Chief Instructor at Carson ATA - Karate for Kids. “Bullying can negatively impact a child’s education, can lead to physical and mental health problems, and greatly impacts the child’s sense of well-being. We started doing these Bullying Prevention seminars years ago because we want to give Carson City youth the tools to protect themselves and others from bullying.”
Carson ATA - Karate for Kids also provides bullying prevention seminars throughout the year at schools within Carson City School District, and is working on presenting at as many schools during the month of October as possible. “According to PACER, one in three students will be bullied or teased this year at school, making it so important to work with these kids outside AND inside the school walls,” said Goodner. “Reaching them at school helps give some of these students that are bullied increased self-confidence to deal with the bullying, as well as bringing awareness to how harmful bullying is.”
