Progress continues with Mt. Rose Highway repaving, improvement project
As crews make good progress on a project to repave and enhance the Mt. Rose Highway, the Nevada Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that paving continues on an upper segment of the highway.
Roadway grinding and paving work from Timberline Drive in the Montreux area to the Mt. Rose summit began Sept. 5. In the approximately two weeks since that time, nearly four miles of roadway have been paved. The project has thus far milled and removed more than 79,000 square yards of old asphalt and placed down 15,000 tons of new asphalt as part of work on the upper section of the highway. Paving was completed on the lower section of the highway in July.
As the project progresses, single lane closures with pilot cars and delays of up to 30 minutes will continue on the two-lane section of highway above the tree line. The paving work will continue night and day Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons, and is scheduled to wrap up in early October, weather permitting.
“We ask the understanding of motorists as we continue work to complete that paving as quickly and safely as possible,” NDOT Resident Engineer Shane Cocking explained.
Ultimately, the approximately $10 million project by contractor Granite Construction will repave and improve Mt. Rose Highway from the highway’s base in south Reno to the Mt. Rose summit. Rumble strips will be installed to enhance driving safety in residential areas at the base of the highway.
Safety enhancements such as nearly 18,000 linear feet of new guardrail, as well as rock removal and mesh cover to reduce erosion-caused rock fall on one roadside slope near the summit, will also be included. The project is currently scheduled to complete next summer.
Motorists are asked to obey traffic controls and drive at posted construction speed limits, or slower as necessary for conditions.
